LibreOffice is a powerful office suite for Linux users, just like Microsoft Office for Windows operating system users. It is free and open source and is used by millions of people around the world. It comes with rich features that enable users to maximize their use potentials.

LibreOffice 7 is the latest major release as of this article update, to be more specific the version is 7.0.4. This release comes with not so much changes but quite a number of improvements from the previous versions to make LibreOffice experience better for Linux users.

Features of LibreOffice 7 release

The following are the noted improvements in LibreOffice 7

  • Visual changes – There is an added icon theme called Sukapura which resembles Apple’s color palette and you can make use of this theme if you have LibreOffice in MacOS.
  • Improvements on LibreOffice Calc – Previously, there were functions that were not convenient while using LibreOffice calc. For example, “RAND.NV()” and “RANDBETWEEN.NV()” functions are now non-volatile and does not get affected by changes in other cells. TEXT() and OFFSET() functions which had issues on how they previously worked have been improved. TEXT() allows an empty string for the second argument while OFFSET() has a rule to allow a value greater that zero for height and width parameters.
  • Changes in LibreOffice Writer – Support for padded numbering and semi-transparent texts. Also improvements in auto-correct feature. There are minor improvements such as highlighting invisible fields with gray for better visibility.
  • Change in LibreOffice Impress|Draw – Here includes support for transparent texts and also limit on the size of page when exporting pdf has been removed.
  • Vulkan Support – Supports optional GPU-based Vulkan acceleration expected to improve performance.
  • ODF 1.3 Support – The new LibreOffce version comes with the newest ODF version, which is 1.3.
  • Improvements to DOCX export – DOCX now saves the latest vrsions; in 2013/2016/2019 instead of the previous 2007. This is quite useful when getting files from different sources.
  • Other improvements include language support, proof-reading tools, scripting, configuration options among others.
