In this tutorial, we will go through a step-by-step installation of Solus 4 Linux. Solus is a popular Linux operating system designed for home Desktop use. This operating system has been built from scratch and uses a forked version of the PiSi package manager, maintained as “eopkg” within Solus. We will install the Gnome edition but you can also pick a different Desktop Environment such as “Budgie”.

Preparing Installation Medium

For installation of Solus Linux on a Laptop, Desktop or any other machine physically, you need to prepare an installation medium.

Download the Solus Desktop and put the ISO file in a directory in your Linux, Windows or macOS machine.

$ ls Downloads/iso/Solus-4.1-GNOME
total 1.9G
-rw-r--r--. 1 jmutai jmutai 1.9G May 12 18:42 Solus-4.1-GNOME.iso

Then create bootable flash drive or with DVD if your computer supports it. I’ll use dd Linux command to create a bootable device.

First, identify the name of your USB device partition. Then run the following command replacing sdX with the name of your USB, e.g sdb.

sudo dd if=/path/to/image.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=8M status=progress oflag=direct

Installing Solus 4 Linux on VirtualBox / KVM / VMware

For installation of Solus Linux on a Virtualized environment, you don’t need to create a bootable device. Just create a new Virtual Machine.

Navigate to the directory with the ISO file.

Hit the Create Button.
